Social networking blog was Brilliant. Let me know when the private army meets and I’ll bring the claret.

Thanks, Emma. I take the point about upgraded service. LinkedIn has paid upgrade features, for example. I agree that we're used to sampling free before using, but feel that free signup with no commitment whatsoever is no good for either party to the transaction. I'll offer a free trial period, as I've always done with magazine subscriptions, and I'll pass on the transaction cost savings of download vs print as competitively as I can but my point is that people have to pay for good stuff, otherwise we just get a lot of dumbed-down bad stuff, subsidised (in theory) by advertising.

The BBC is in danger of shredding what's left of its credibility by pandering to the lowest common denominator whilst extracting a manadatory fee from everybody on the premise that it's doing the opposite.

THUS will be good enough for people to pay for it or simply not happen. I'm not a cheap date - who is?

Interesting post, John, food for thought. Appreciate the fact that once a service has been delivered for free, it is hard to start charging, except perhaps for upgraded service? The two sites you name as being worth dishing out dosh for (but don't ask for it: TED and Linkedin) are undeniably brilliant and have my absolute trust and loyalty, but that is because of two different reasons: TED, because I can never get to the real thing and the information they send me is always inspiring and interesting; and Linkedin because I like having an online CV. I would pay a small amount for their service, but that is because they have already proven their value - whereas before I 'used' their service, I would not. I am sure brand people would say that this also had a lot to do with brand value/identity and all that gubbins. Good luck with Thus, I look forward to seeing it, would also be interested to see how you monetise it :)
